Indian Head Casino officially opened its doors in March of 1996. Its grand opening represented over two years of carefulIndina Head rock formation n the Warm Springs Reservation consideration and planning, and it has since proven to be one of the Tribes' more profitable ventures.

Indian Head Casino changed its name to Kah-Nee-Ta High Desert Resort & Casino in February of 2001.

The Tribes entered the gaming industry tentatively. Following careful analysis of the commercial value of such an enterprise, the issue was put to the voters who passed the Gaming Referendum in December of 1994. This referendum approved the opening of a casino, and the construction of a new facility to house it, but did not represent a long-term commitment for the Tribes. It represented, instead, a five year trial period. Continued operation of the Casino requires that the Gaming Referendum be passed every five years. So far, community support has remained strong, and in early 1999 the referendum was reaffirmed.

Less than six months after the initial referendum, a temporary casino was opened and construction of the current 25,000 square foot facility began at Kah-Nee-Ta Resort. The $6 million project was funded entirely with Tribal funds, and managed without outside consultation.

Since its completion, the casino has proven to be an unqualified success. It has consistently produced a profit for the Tribes, and Kah-Nee-Ta Resort as a whole has benefited from the visitors that it attracts.
